Welcome to the first tutorial scenario for the Fantasy Battle Simulator.

The goal of this scenario is to learn to use the simulator controls. These controls are found along the bottom edge of the screen when youre in the simulator. Lets look at them from left to right...

1. The leftmost icon is pause/resume. Clicking on it causes the simulator to pause (if running) or resume running (if paused). You can also press the S (Stop) key to pause or the G (Go) key to resume.

At this point, you should click on dismiss (or press the Enter key) which will take you into the simulator so you can practice pausing and resuming. You can return to this briefing by pressing the B (Briefing) key -- but only when the simulator is paused.

2. The second icon is sound. It is a toggle icon, so it has a small green check (or red X) above it to show that sound is on (or off). In this scenario, the only sound youll hear is the soft ka-thunk that marks the arrival of a new warrior.

3-4. The next two icons are mode icons, used to program the mouse buttons. Left-clicking on a mode icon ties the left mouse button to that icons action; right-clicking ties the right button. The black buttons in the upper corners of each icon show which buttons are currently tied to it. To start with, the left mouse button is tied to describe and the right one to center.

When you click describe on any battlefield object, a description window for that object pops up. You can drag the window around using the mouse; it disappears as soon as you release the mouse button.

If you click center anywhere on the battlefield, the viewport scrolls so that that point is as close as possible to the center of the viewport. (This scenario draws a small eye on the battlefield to show where the center point is supposed to be.) Clicking center on a warrior attaches the center point to him so the viewport will automatically follow him around.

5-6. The next two icons are zoom-in and zoom-out. The viewport has three levels of zoom. When its zoomed out as far as it can go, the zoom-out icon turns grey. When its zoomed in as far as it can go, zoom-in is greyed.

7. The obstacle icon comes next. Most scenarios include battlefield obstacles such as trees or columns. This toggle icon changes how opaque they are.

8. After that comes tzones, another toggle icon. Each warrior has a target zone, a circular region directly in front of him. Warriors can only attack targets in their target zone. When this icon is on, target zones get outlined in color on the map.

9-12. The four rightmost icons take you out of the simulator, so theyre enabled only when it is paused. Briefing takes you to the briefing. Restart restarts the scenario from the beginning. (Pressing the R key does this too.) Menu takes you to the scenario menu (as does the M key). Quit takes you completely out of the game.

Youre now ready to dismiss this briefing.
